A PSYCHIA TRIC STUDY OF THE TATTOOS IN ROK ARMY


Abstract
The ninety tattooed males inRepublic of Korea Armywere studied and compared with those who were not tattooed 100 persons.The examinations of the tattooed cases were itemized in number, character, site, motivation, ag
e, history of de linquencyand
crime,
psychosocial status, personal history and family history, and the following results were obtained.
Average number of tattoo on one person of the tattoos is 2.2. Chinese letters, Japanese letters, rose, dragon, tiger among the various characters of tattoos were frequently found. The average age of their initial tattooing was the age of 18.9.
Motivation of tattoo was made with group setting mostly, to participate in or identify with their group. Left upper extremity, trunk(back and anterior chest), right upper extremity were the favorite site. Two thirds of cases were tattooed on more
than
one occasion. The scars of self-injury and cigarette burns were frequently seen. While 64% of tattooed males have had a history of delinquent behaviors at adolescent. 45.6% of them were taken to the police, 27.7% of them were punished at school
.41% of
tattooed males were criminally convicted.
The tattooed males had begun to experience drug abuse, sexual contact much earlier than non-tattooed group.
The lower lever of educational and socio-economic background were found in the tattooed group. And a history of parental loss was more frequent in the tattooed than the control group. Parents of the tattooed males were also in the status of lower
educational and socio-economic level In addition to their unhappy family life and insufficient parental love during their childhood, they often had suffered many family conflicts and problems such as poverty, parental loss, illness and
alienation.
The analysis of MMPI revealed that the scores of F scale and Hs, Pd, Pa, Sc, Ma scales were significantly higher in the tattooed group.
In summary these findings suggest that being tattooed is usually influenced by environmental factors and considerably associated with their personality factors.
